Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I want to be understanding of how each student is different, and how my teaching strategies can best meet their needs.  To do this, I must be flexible, willing to adapt methods and schedules so that it fits individual student learning.  It is important for me to be inclusive, so that all students feel that they are an important part of the classroom and have a sense of belonging.  I must be caring and aware of the needs in the classroom, and passionate about how I teach and who I am teaching to.  Within all of this, I believe it is important to be a respectful teacher by accepting and promoting diversity in the classroom.

Teachers owe their students consistent commitment. Commitment is linked with dedication, and through hard work as a teacher I will successfully teach my students and help them to learn.  Being committed to students occurs through teaching with methods that are best suited for each learner to help them reach their highest potential.  Learning looks different for each student, but all students can grow in their knowledge and understanding throughout their schooling.

In general, the goals for my students include seeing personal growth from the beginning of the year to when they leave at the end of the year.  Each student begins and ends the year at a different point in their learning.  It is my goal for them to progress throughout the year and achieve new understanding from a personal standpoint.    

Today, education is essential in society and the community.  Students grow and learn through building connections with local members of the community.  As a teacher, I can help equip students with the tools they need to make a difference in their surrounding environment.  Students should feel connected with the community that the school is in, and the teacher should integrate aspects of community life into the classroom.

It is my role as a teacher to create a positive learning environment, where students feel safe physically and emotionally to explore new things.  It is my responsibility to create activities and opportunities to help facilitate this learning, such as by incorporating hands-on learning and relating classroom content to the real world.  They also learn best when they are active, they interact with other students, and they are provided with different ways of learning.  As a teacher, I demonstrate acceptance and inclusion to all students so that each feels important and cared for.  Knowing my students allows me to help them reach their full potential, which is my job as a teacher.
